3. The Bible & Tradition

IN THE WEEK AHEAD...

 Our Questions

If God is a spirit, how could he have written a book?  I tried to read the Bible and ended up with unpronounceable names and outlandish laws - not very spiritual!

What to Read

in the US Catholic Catechism read chapter 3: Proclaim the Gospel to Every Creature pp. 21-33

In your bible

    Psalm 119:97-109

2 Timothy 3:14-17 be faithful to what you have learned; all scripture is inspired from God

1 Thessalonians 2:13 they received the message of Paul as the very words of God

Glossary

Canon = the collection or list of books accepted by the church as inspired.

Catholic Practice

A short prayer of signing the forehead, lips and heart with a cross precedes the reading of scripture.  It is concluded by devoutly kissing the holy book.

Checking on what I Understand

There is a set of fun and stimulating quizzes that will confirm what you know and challenge what you do not yet know. Go to St. Edward Church website < www.saintedwardshelton.org> and click on “Becoming Catholic”.  Choose lesson three and  do do the self-correcting on-line <quiz 3>

Getting Personal

Have you felt that you were floundering through the Bible?  Have you resisted the teachings of the church (i.e. tradition)?

TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL (1994 Series) Monica, Tess, and Andrew are a trio of angels sent to earth to tell depressed and troubled people that God loves them and God hasn't forgotten them.

Jacob (1994)

joseph (1995)

PRINCE OF EGYPT (1998) The life of Moses as described in the Old Testament's Book of Exodus. The story centers upon the the destiny of two brothers--one born a prince, the other born a slave. Only one will emerge as a leader and as a liberator, fighting to free Hebrew slaves employed by his father, the Pharaoh, and finally realizing his mission as a savior.

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (1955) the subject of Moses' life is particularly timely, as it deals with themes such as whether man is to be ruled by God's law or the whims of a dictator like Rameses.
